Cherrydale Homes for Sale

Cherrydale Real Estate

Cherrydale is centrally located in North Arlington. Its boundaries are Route 66 on the east and south, Lorcom Lane and Old Dominion Drive on the north, and on the west by North Utah St and the H.B. Woodlawn School. The neighborhood contains predominantly single family homes with four townhouse developments, a senior citizens apartment building and two large apartment/condos buildings. Many of the homes date from the early part of the 20th century and would best be described as frame homes in a farmhouse or cottage style. These homes typically range in size from 1500 to 3000 square feet. In the pst ten years, many of the smaller and older homes have been demolished and new larger 4000-6000 square foot homes, many in the Craftsman style, have been built. Most of the homes are located on small lots in the range of 6000-7000 square feet. These homes are located on quiet streets with large trees which evoke a small town feeling although Washington D.C. is less than four miles away and the Virginia Square, Ballston and Clarendon Metro stops are all within walking distance.

The residents of Cherrydale like the small town feel of the neighborhood and its proximity to the shopping and restaurants in the Clarendon, Virginia Square, Courthouse and Rosslyn neighborhoods. A farmers’ market, held each Saturday near the Courthouse Metro, is a very popular attraction where the vendors offer fresh (often organic) fruits and vegetables, homemade cheese, yogurt, baked goods, cultivated mushrooms, locally raised (hormone free) meat, organic milk and fresh fish from the Chesapeake Bay.

The Cherrydale commercial corridor is found most along Lee Highway and consists mostly of smaller retail shops, many of which have been in business in their locations for decades. A Safeway store along Lee Highway provides convenient grocery shopping. In addition to the proximity of the Metro line, major commuter arterial routes are close at hand, including Route 66, Washington Boulevard, Lee Highway, Military Road and Glebe Road.

Prior to European settlement, native Americans of the Algonquin tribe lived near the Cherrydale area, predominantly along the Potomac River. The first land grants to settlers were made in the early 1700’s. The first known settler, James Donaldson, began farming in the area in the 1780’s.
